MANJAPPAI RETURNS WITH IT'S OWN AWESOMENESS!
In early days, manjapai is symbol of village folk (rural) who is raw , uncultured bla.bla. I personally experienced that my mother used to send my certificates, money in majapai as it is considered to be sacred color, but the city brats think otherwise. So, I used to hide it in polythene bags It is how the manjapai was looked down by the exurbanites.
Manjapai’ —named after their yellow color. Interestingly, the bags were yellow because they were dipped in turmeric that was used as a disinfectant. Durable and reusable, these bags primarily made in Madurai and Erode, however, lost their significance after plastic bags came into the picture.
In a welcome change, the recent years have witnessed a revival of these cloth bags, thanks to increased environmental awareness on plastic menace. After three decades, people as well as the government realized that using the artificial stuffs (polythene) are dangerous to human being and they spoil the environment etc.
Coming to the question, yes the common public now do not hesitate to carry manjapai to public places as it is no more a symbol of rural migrated people. Now ,it is symbol of pride. The bottom line is “At last the Manjapai awareness campaign is taken up by the government itself”. Happy indeed!.
